The Historic Hotel Waterloo was chosen to host the Queen's entourage on her 1953 Coronation Tour of New Zealand. When the hotel was converted for budget accommodation, the luxuries remained.
Downtown Backpackers has a different feel to that of other budget accommodation properties in Wellington and New Zealand. Facilities such as private tiled bathrooms in most of the double, twin and single rooms, elegant staircases, high ceilings and you can't go past sampling the menu in the on-site café that is located in the old hotel's ballroom.
Interestingly how things haven't changed one bit after leaving Auckland exactly close to a year later. Catching up with ex-colleagues was intriguing, it was like walking down the memory lane. However, I was having second thoughts about the journey that lies ahead... A 6 days journey on board with Kiwi Experience off I go.

NZ's best backpackers!!! This place is awesome. From its Art Deco orginal features, its super fast lifts, it is close to everything and it's got everything you need...without the big budget. I loved staying here.
